An entry for the RIBA/Wates ‘Housing for the Private Rental Market’ competition. We aimed to create a sustainable rented community where households can grow within their homes or easily relocate to more appropriate neighbouring accommodation.
Both houses and site are designed for maximum flexibility. Each house can be easily adapted into two apartments, a live/work unit or traditional family house by re-arranging a few non-structural partitions.
The external envelope, bathrooms and kitchens remain in a set position to minimize disruption and ease conversion whereas staircases are independent of the floorplan to allow sub-division by floor.
